July 2009 - The Karat Patch was voted "BEST JEWELRY STORE" by the readers of the Big Spring Herald in the 2009 READER'S CHOICE AWARDS.  The Karat Patch received a certificate from The Herald and a listing along with the other recipients in a full page announcement.  The poll takes place over a period of weeks with readers of The Herald in Big Spring, Texas and the surrounding areas of Howard County.

August 23, 2009 - Jay Phinney and his son Zac were part of the 1,859 guitar pickers who broke the Guinness World Record for 'Largest Guitar Ensemble' at 2:00 p.m. in Luckenbach, Texas.  The event was held in conjunction with the "Voices for a Grateful Nation" recording project, with proceeds benefiting American Armed Forces Veterans and their families.  In regard to the significance of the historic event both Jay and Zac each decided to take (from their respective guitar collections) their very first guitars; Jay's is a 1975 Epiphone FT-150 (Kalamazoo) and Zac's is a 1995 Fender.  The two songs played for the record were 'The Luckenbach Song' a.k.a. (The Basics of Love) recorded by Waylon Jennings and the Woody Guthrie classic 'This Land is Your Land'.  Zac is in the left circle (dark hair and glasses) and Jay in the right circle.  This photo was taken by a representative for the Gibson Guitar Company, one of the sponsors for the event.
